There's a BBC television series airing now (I think), called "The Story of the Guitar": http://www.bbc.co.uk/musictv/guitars/. Looks like the series
is still in progress. There are some interesting interview clips at the website, including one with Bob Brozman.

As well as the documentary series (three programmes) there is a compilation of clips entitled Guitar
Heroes at the BBC. (Follow the link above) Currently available is the second programme, which covers the 1970s. Most of the clips (all full songs taken
from various BBC programmes such The Old Grey Whistle Test) are of 70s rock heroes such as Deep Purple, but there are
also plenty of slightly more left-field artists such as the brilliant Dr Feelgood (with Wilko Johnson doing his best 'just released from the asylum'
act), Pentangle, BB King, John Martyn (Echoplexed to within an inch of his life) and Paco Pena. Check out Little Feat and the wonderful and much-missed Rory
Gallagher for some stunning slide guitar, Dire Straits in what may have been their first TV appearance and U2's Bono seemingly rehearsing for a part in
Riverdance... Warning: Some of the fashions on display could seriously damage your health, mainly due to breakage of
ribs through too much laughter.

At the end of the final program they flashed clips of I don't know how many guitarists but one jumped out of the screen - Davey Graham aged about
twelve-and-a-half.
I don't think they showed him in the programme proper, but I wasn't watching it with too much interest for a lot of the time as it was showing lots of that electrickery stuff: way beyond me! |

Only caught the last two shows. Really enjoyed the second last but thought the last was pretty weak. Just seemed like a montage of modern guitarist's with
special focus on eighties 'pop classics.' And the edge playing nursary rhymes through some pedals!

Great programme which notably scratched the surface on the styles and history but certainly wet your apetite to research more. I think the series could go on
years if they covered every facet. I loved the way the slide guitar was explored not sure whether it was of Hawaiian origin or bluesman....in the early days
some guys were blues in the week and Hawaiian at weekends !
Les Paul & Bert Weeden conveyed their passion also.....Bert Weeden said 'I love all instruments...the cello is particularly beautiful.....but the guitar that's the only one....and the girls love a guitar player' yeh I wish my wife felt the same ! |
