I visited Manchester ( UK) today and in Forsythe's excellent and long-established shop on Deansgate there was a guitar made by the Oahu company of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1934. It was about an 000 in size, darkly varnished and with that "thin white rope" type of binding and soundhole surround that appears on 30s guitars in old pics of bluesmen. The sound was monstrous! It was really loud and almost perfectly balanced and had tone in tons. Does anyone know anything about this firm? Anyone own an Oahu (now or in the past)?

yes,i have one-an Oahu jumbo circa 1935-with the gold floral motifs-it`s a killer guitar-mine is x-braced-a great guitar.I think they may have been built by Kay?.Neil Harpe is your man-he`s an expert on Oahu`s.

Gerry, I'm no expert but from what I've read and heard Oahu was a cheaper brand than Gibson, say, or Epiphone. They made a lot of lap steels during the Hawaiian music craze starting in the 20s. I guess that's kind of obvious by the name, huh? I used to have a small Oahu amp that I bought from an elderly pedal steel player when he retired. I ended up selling it to a lap steel player and have had seller's remorse ever sense. I've only played one Oahu acoustic, spanish style guitar and my reaction was much like yours. Unfortunately it was not for sale.
Are you going to buy this one?

Oahu built guitars at all levels-cheap:>expensive-the one i have was priced at $98.00 in the 1935 catalogue,the same price as a Martin D28!.Not a cheap guitar at the time-if only it had appreciated like the Martin

.They really are good guitars.Let us know if you buy it Gerry-i`d seen it on Forsyth`s website and think it`s a fair price for that model.

It would appear that Oahu guitars were built at the Regal facility, which also happened to be where the earliest Kay guitars were made. There were some rather incestuous manufacturing going on in Chicago, with everyone building guitars or parts of guitars for everyone else.

The $98 model that "lyndvs" is referring to is called the Style 68B. Here it is, as it appeared in a mid-30s Oahu catalog:

I have one myself, a squareneck that had been converted to roundneck by a masterful luthier, the aged refinish on the back of the neck is truly magnificent.
I would describe it as a loud but pedestrian sounding guitar. I play it with a DeArmond soundhole pickup, as I find its tone to be less than thrilling compared to my other Oahu, a cheaper all-mahogany model 65M. This one has a tremendous V-profile neck which is a bit of a bear on the hands, but the tone of this instrument is truly sublime.

Thanks for the info, twitchytoes, and the pics, but what's with the personal stuff on lyndvs? OK, you might know him personally and just be ragging him a little - no problem with that. But if you don't know him personally it seems to me rather offensive and not in keeping with the spirit of this particular forum.

attempting to stay somewhat on topic: i own a cheap oahu which i would guess is post '30s. it's okay, but no cause for the rave reviews i hear from others. i'm probably gonna bastardize it someday and turn it into a big joe style 9 string... check out fred kinbom on youtube for some great examples of good sounding oahus. http://www.youtube.com/user/oahusteel75

straying OT... mr. twitchy... i also read the igs forum and i seem to recall that lyndvs appeared on this forum roughly around the same time that "lyndon" was tearing up the igs forum. that and the first 4 letters of their names appears to be the end of the similarities. lyndvs has shared nothing but positivity with us here. "lyndon" was suspected to be a banned former member of the igs forum, trying to settle a score... please be sure your facts are straight before you start publicly dissing people.

Rest assured my I have my facts straight.
"lyndvs" had a number of posts on the Blindman's Blues Forum where he also stirred up trouble with some members (forgetting that other forum as well, "lyndvs"?) signed both "markdvs" and "lyndvs" but went back and covered his tracks and deleted them. "Polite and friendly at all times" would be a gross misrepresentation of the nature of the posts "lyndvs" had made there. A number of them had been deleted by moderators. Not quite the actions of a fellow with nothing to hide. I suppose as long as he behaves himself and keeps his foul-mouthed homophobic outbursts to himself, he can pretend to be whoever he wants to pretend to be here. I do not abide a liar and a coward, but all you're welcome to do so if you chose. No one is quite as anonymous as they think they are behind an internet pseudonym, are they "lyndvs"?

Lyndvs, you are a true gentleman in not responding to these attacks.

Twitchytoe: give it up. Lyndvs has posted here many times (roughly ten times as many posts as you) and has always been a thoughtful and polite poster who observes the customs and manners of this forum. Sure, we have some sharp debates, but we do not indulge in nasty personal attacks, we do not carry on with these attacks if someone says the reasons for them are invalid, we do not call other members 'liars' and we do not indulge in other denigratory verbiage. As the guy who started this thread - and as it brought you out into the open I half-wish I had not bothered - I feel I have the right to say this: if this kind of thing is your idea of fun, boy are you in the wrong forum! Only Stefan has the power and right to terminate a person's membership, but if it were up to me you'd be long gone.

Oahu Diana. No pickup/bridge cover. Back is chewed up from one of those old type lap steel stands. 25 1/2". Sweet sound. Super solid case. $295+sh.

Fender 1000. Fully functional, all cables intact. Very good overall condition. A few dings and such. Not sure of model year, but it has rollers on nut and bridge. Only one case, black tolex in reasonably good condition. Pots and switch could use a cleaning. $1275+sh.

Getting back to the case in point, I'm looking for a UK guitar to complement my LG2 that I keep in Hong Kong. Heading back to Manchester in a couple of weeks, and will definitely go into Forsyth's and check out the Oahu. Must try not to play the J50 they have though...although it is bonus time...

I have a few of these Oahu Jumbos - great gutiars. Here is my 68K Jumbo- still a square neck - some folks have converted these and they make wonderful huge sounding Spanish-standard-style play guitars. I am selling this one if anyone is interested.

Heading back to Manchester in a couple of weeks, and will definitely go into Forsyth's and check out the Oahu. Must try not to play the J50 they have though...although it is bonus time... Here is my 68K Jumbo- still a square neck - some folks have converted these and they make wonderful huge sounding Spanish-standard-style play guitars. I am selling this one if anyone is interested.
